WHAT WE DO

BIG is one of just a handful of Canadian companies that design, manufacture and install glazing products.  As a company, BIG has attained the status of “consulting engineers” with the province of Ontario, a rare distinction in the Province of Ontario.

Founded in 1992, Basic Structure Engineering underwent a voluntary name change to Basic Industries Glazing after the Engineering Society requested that the word “Engineering” not appear in any business name.

With over 100 years of experience, BIG is continuing a family tradition of excellence in the curtain wall glazing industry.  The owner, a professional Engineer, keeps a watchful eye and gives his personal touch to each project.  This ensures unmatched quality and ability to meet even the most aggressive construction schedule.

OUR FOCUS

Basic Industries Glazing curtain wall products are custom designed for each project.  In house Engineering, design, fabrication and assembly along with factory pre-glazing ensures quick turn around while exceeding quality standards.

OUR PROCESS

Basic Industries Glazing curtain wall design uses the rain screen principle. This principle addresses the aspect of pressure differentials to keep a building watertight.  The pressure equalization approach produces test results proving that the rain screen principal is a superior design.

Leadership

Edward Ulrich P.Eng., the company’s founder and President, traces his roots back to one of Europe’s largest and most successful glazing companies, F.W.  Ulrich of Hamburg, Germany.

“My family has been in glazing for well over 100 years, so it’s in my genes”.  Says Mr. Ulrich.  He adds with a laugh: “They really made it big during World War II… there were a lot of broken windows to replace during the war!”

The family’s entrepreneurial as well as engineering talent is evident.  A graduate of civil engineering from the University of Toronto, Edward in his first year of business, commenced with one installer and one draftsman to yield $400,000 in revenue.  Since then, BIG has flourished and currently handles projects with glazing components valued in the millions, servicing all parts of North America and beyond.  Mr. Ulrich has further expanded his portfolio to include Hotel and Retirement properties as well as building construction & development.

OUR COMMITMENT

The concept of naturally lit space enclosed within transparent boundaries offers today’s architect an exciting new dimension in design.  The possibilities are endless.  We make the challenges surmountable.
